MPAC Condemns Shooting Targeting Muslim Imam in Sandy, Utah

Washington, D.C. | www.mpac.org | February 26, 2026 — The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) is deeply troubled by reports that a Muslim imam was targeted in a shooting incident in Sandy, Utah, on Monday evening. Local reporting indicates the individual shot at multiple times is Imam Shuaib Din, a respected leader in the Muslim community, and authorities have indicated the case may be investigated as a potential hate crime.

We are grateful that Imam Din was not physically harmed and survived this attack, and we commend law enforcement for their prompt response. At the same time, the details reported publicly, including indications that the assailant may have followed the imam from his home and fired repeatedly, underscore the seriousness of this incident and the urgent need for accountability.

MPAC urges federal, state, and local authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, determine motive, and pursue accountability to the fullest extent of the law. We also call on public officials to speak clearly and consistently against anti-Muslim bigotry and to support concrete measures that protect houses of worship and vulnerable communities.

MPAC stands in solidarity with Imam Din, the Utah Islamic Center, and Muslims across Utah.
