MPAC’s First Amendment Center Strongly Condemns Efforts to Silence Macklemore Over Speech on Palestine

Washington, D.C. | www.mpac.org | September 14, 2026 — The Muslim Public Affairs Council’s First Amendment Center is deeply concerned by reports that Macklemore was removed from the remaining U.S. dates of Ed Sheeran’s tour after several stadiums objected to his participation following his public statements on Palestine.

Artists have long used their platforms to speak about war, injustice, and government policy. Those views can be challenged and criticized. But when political speech is met with canceled appearances and lost opportunities, it sends a clear warning to others about the cost of speaking out.

The circumstances are especially concerning if publicly owned or controlled venues were involved. Public institutions cannot use their authority to punish or exclude speakers simply because of their political viewpoint.

“What we’re witnessing is deeply concerning. Political speech sits at the heart of the First Amendment. If a public entity played any role in excluding Macklemore because of his views on Palestine, that deserves immediate scrutiny.We have seen this pressure placed on students, faculty, advocates, and now artists.

No public institution should be in the business of deciding which political viewpoints are acceptable enough to be heard.”

MPAC’s First Amendment Center calls for transparency from any publicly owned or controlled venue involved in Macklemore’s removal. Americans should be free to debate controversial political issues without institutions using access and opportunity as tools to silence one side of that debate.
