The offering given for the sake of God are [meant] only for:
1. the poor and the needy, and
2. those who are in charge thereof, and
3. those whose hearts are to be won over, and
4. for freeing of people from bondage, and
5. [for] those overburdened by debt, and
6. for [every struggle] in God’s cause, and
7. for the wayfarers;
[This is] and ordinance from God, and God is all knowing, wise.
Surah At-Taubah, The Holy Quran 9:60
We work to build bridges and win the hearts and minds of influencers and decision-makers to convey an authentic understanding of Islam.We work in the entertainment industry and news media to get better stories told about Islam and Muslims.
We advocate for human rights and religious freedom. In the last year, we have been working to bring Congress’s attention to Kashmir, the Uighurs, Iran, the protecting the rights to boycott, and the No Hate Act.We’ve been working with civil society partners and the DHS to protect houses of worship. Our goal is to make more public resources available for American Muslim institutions. We were invited to join and co-chair a special Department of Homeland Security task force as well as participate in a local LA city task force. Our goals were to explicitly find methods to protect houses of worship.
Last year we ensured that countering institutionalized white supremacy, the fight against the Muslim Ban and the move to protect our houses of worship remained priorities for policymakers.We partnered with Rep. Adam Schiff, interfaith partners, experts and community leaders on how to address and counter white supremacy in our country.We released our white paper: “The White Supremacist Threat to America” to highlight the history and effects of this threat for policy makers. We’ve actively worked with partners in tech, like Facebook, YouTube and Google, to ensure that online bigotry is being seen as a threat, and is being monitored. After two years of highlighting the threat of white nationalism to tech companies, both Facebook and Youtube took our policy recommendations. MPAC stands up to Islamophobes who seek to tarnish Islam and marginalize Muslims.
We are in the fight against discrimination in all its ugly forms, be it against a religion, immigrants or refugees.
The seventh category contemporarily refers to the problems of the homeless and refugees, at home and abroad. MPAC has consistently lobbied for an end to homelessness, and the right of return of all refugees.
