The death of 18 year-old Michael Brown last month grabbed national headlines not only because the life of an unarmed youth was tragically stolen, but because of the underlying racial tensions that it exposed in the community of Ferguson, Mo. However, the growing protests and subsequent coverage showed that the racial tensions exposed are, in fact, pervasive across the country. -

MPAC published and released the latest of its policy papers today called “Domestic Drones: Implications for Privacy and Due Process in the United States.” The paper analyzes and discusses the concern that the recent proliferation of drones could have negative consequences on civil liberties. -

Aisha Jama, a current senior at the University of Michigan, joined MPAC this summer as a government and policy intern in the Washington, DC office. With a double major in International Studies and Arabic, Aisha credits her involvement in student media organizations for prompting her move to DC to experience the crossroads of policy and media. -

This morning, The Intercept revealed that five high-profile American Muslims were subject to years-long secret surveillance by the FBI and NSA between the years 2002-2009. Documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden exposed that those targeted include: Faisal Gill, former Department of Homeland Security top advisor in the Bush Administration; Asim Ghafoor, well known defense attorney; Hooshang Amirahmadi, Iranian-American professor at Rutgers University; Agha Saeed, former political science professor at California State University; and Nihad Awad, Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). -

Last week, 15 American Muslim college and graduate students from around the country traveled to Washington, DC, for MPAC’s 8th annual Government and Policy Summit. Over four days, they had the unique opportunity to learn about the policy-making process through high-level meetings with various leaders at the White House, federal agencies, Congress, think tanks and civic groups. Plus, they participated in leadership development workshops and learned about opportunities for their own career development in the arena of policymaking. -

This week, 14 young American Muslims from all around the country spent four whirlwind days in Los Angeles for our 4th annual Young Leaders Hollywood Summit. This talented group of aspiring artists, filmmakers, actors and content creators had the priceless opportunity to meet with industry giants from CBS Television, Fox Studios, the Creative Artists Agency, the professional guilds, and YouTube Space LA. They also got to meet with successful American Muslims working in the industry, and built their own network to support one another as they launch their careers. -

Adnan Suleman, a rising third year law student at Tulane University Law School, has joined MPAC as a summer government and policy intern. Adnan's interest in applying his legal training and political science background to substantive policy work has brought him to MPAC.
