ACTION ALERT: Contact Elected Official in Support of Due Process Guarantee Act

January 17, 2012

MPAC urges all concerned citizens to contact their elected officials to voice their support for House Bill 3702, known as the Due Process Guarantee Act. The proposed bill seeks to guarantee all individuals Constitutional right to Due Process, as well as undo the harm done to our democracy by the passing of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which permits indefinite detention of an individual who is accused of terrorism.

Though Congress and the President signed the NDAA into law on Dec. 31, 2011, the President issued a public statement expressing his reservations with the provision, including a personal assurance to not use the provisions. This, however, is no substitute for legal protections.

Action Alert:

Call or write your local representative and members of the subcommittee urging them to vote in favor of HR Bill 3702: Due Process Guarantee Act.

Suggested talking Points:

  • HR Bill 3702: Due Process Guarantee Act will serve as a remedy to the unconstitutional NDAA provisions by guaranteeing the rights of Due Process for all American citizens and permanent legal residents.
  • The NDAA, as it stands now, is an affront to our civil liberties and there is no guarantee that any administration would protect the legal rights of citizens accused of terrorism.
  • Civilian courts have been effective at fighting terrorism since our nation was founded more than 225 years ago. Since 9/11 more than 400 accused terrorists have been successfully prosecuted; while indefinite military detentions such as those at Guantanamo, serve as a recruiting depot for more terrorists.
