As news continues to pour out over the current conflict between Hamas and Israel, we cannot forget the ongoing crisis in Syria. To date, the total death toll of Syrians is almost at 40,000. The Syrian revolution has been ongoing since March 2011, but after the formation of a coalition of Syrian opposition groups in Doha on Nov. 11 known as the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces (NCSROF), MPAC views this development with hope for the future of Syria.

MPAC today condemned the Taliban’s appalling attack against Malala Yousafzai, an innocent 14-year-old girl in Pakistan, who was advocating for education. We want to know if Muslim and Arab students feel treated fairly and safe on campus so that we can share our findings with the UC Advisory Council on Campus Climate studying this issue. -

MPAC today condemned the intentional killing of Afghan civilians by a US soldier. The soldier reportedly left the US base in the middle of the night and entered a village, opening fire on civilians who were sleeping. The atrocity ended in the murder of several people, including nine children. -

On Jan. 11, 2012, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of the church in Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), one of the most important religious freedom cases. The Supreme Court ruled that the government cannot tell religious institutions who they can hire and fire, essentially commanding noninterference by the government into faith-based institutions when it comes to matters of employment issues. -

The Muslim Public Affairs Council today expressed its support for the passage of a historic United Nations resolution to combat ideologies of religious hatred through free expression, instead of silencing expression by creating a global blasphemy law. It also announced the release of its new position paper on the issue, entitled "No Compulsion in Religion: A Faith-Based Critique of the 'Defamation of Religions' Concept." -

MPAC has been following the EEOC v. Hosanna-Tabor case intently as this is a matter of religious freedom, protected by the First Amendment. Moreover, the case holds such monumental significance that MPAC submitted an amicus curiae, or “friend of the court” brief, in support of the Church.
