Washington, DC | www.mpac.org | – March 4, 2025 – Recent statements by President Donald Trump, suggesting the defunding of educational institutions that allow protests, deemed “illegal”, pose a grave threat to this fundamental liberty. His call for mass arrests, deportations, and expulsions of students engaged in peaceful demonstrations not only infringes on First Amendment rights but also undermines the very principles upon which our nation was founded. The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) stands firm in its commitment to safeguard the constitutional right to freedom of assembly, a cornerstone of our democracy that has been vital in shaping the United States.
Throughout U.S. history, we have seen students courageously take the lead by protesting and advocating for change on their college campuses during pivotal times such as the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Anti-Apartheid Movement, and the Women’s Suffrage Movement. These students challenged the status quo, passionately fighting for justice and human rights. Now imagine an America without these transformative protests of the past. What would our society look like if these students, bravely representing these movements, had been silenced? Each of these historical protests, particularly those on college campuses, has been essential in advancing the rights of all citizens. These students have challenged injustices and inspired generations to stand for equality and liberty.
The suppression of peaceful assembly would strip our nation of its democratic principles. It would lead us down a path where dissent is punished, and diverse voices are stifled, jeopardizing democratic discourse necessary for a healthy society. The consequences of such suppression would be profoundly undemocratic, fostering an environment of fear and compliance instead of encouraging the vibrant exchange of ideas that propels societal progress.
The Muslim Public Affairs Council is dedicated to defending these rights every day, recognizing that the ability to gather and protest peacefully is not merely an act of expression but a defense of our collective liberty. We are committed to ensuring that these rights are upheld on college campuses and beyond, as they are vital for the empowerment of our future leaders and the preservation of our democratic values.
We urge all Americans, regardless of political affiliation, to reflect on the essential role that freedom of assembly has played in our nation’s history. We call on leaders across the political spectrum to stand against any attempts to undermine these rights and to reaffirm their commitment to the principles of freedom and justice.
Let us remember that America’s strength lies in its commitment to protecting the rights of all its citizens to speak, assemble, and advocate for their beliefs without fear of government retaliation. Together, we must continue to defend these freedoms, ensuring that our nation remains a beacon of democracy and a testament to the enduring power of peaceful protest.
