In Memory of Pope Francis: A Voice for Peace and Justice

Washington, D.C. | www.mpac.org | April 21, 2025 — The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a global spiritual leader whose legacy will be remembered for his deep compassion, moral courage, and tireless advocacy for justice and human dignity.

Pope Francis was not only a shepherd to millions of Catholics around the world — he was a bridge-builder who extended his hand to the Muslim world and beyond. His historic visits to the Middle East, including his 2019 meeting with Grand Imam Ahmed al-Tayeb in Abu Dhabi, marked a turning point in Muslim-Christian relations. That visit produced the landmark Document on Human Fraternity, which called for peace, coexistence, and mutual understanding — values we share and hold dear.

In recent months, Pope Francis spoke with clarity and conscience about the suffering of civilians in Gaza. He offered prayers, called for an immediate ceasefire, and took the unprecedented step of speaking personally with members of Gaza’s Christian community as bombs fell around them. His concern for the people of Gaza — Muslim and Christian alike — reflected his unwavering commitment to the sanctity of every human life.

“Pope Francis was a moral compass in a time of global confusion,” said MPAC President Salam Al-Marayati. “He reminded us all — regardless of our faith — that true leadership is grounded in humility, courage, and service to humanity. His solidarity with the people of Gaza and his efforts to heal religious divides are a lasting gift to our world.”

Pope Francis reminded the world that religious leadership must not be confined to ritual, but must speak courageously in the face of injustice. At a time of rising division and conflict, he stood as a moral compass, challenging all of us — across faiths — to see the face of God in every person.

May Pope Francis rest in eternal peace. And may his legacy continue to inspire people of faith and conscience to pursue peace, justice, and mercy for all.
