Op-Ed: Who are the Lost Boys of Sudan?
August 12, 2009
On July 24, John Deng, a 26-year-old Sudanese refugee was shot and killed by a Johnson County sheriff's civil deputy following an altercation in which Deng allegedly stabbed a 63-year-old man. The investigation is ongoing. Born in 1983, Deng may have been one of the so-called "Lost Boys of Sudan." Whether or not he was, his ultimately violent death leaves us with many unanswered questions regarding the fate of refugees in our city and state.
