Wadood, Govt Intern, Has a Strong Passion for Fighting for Civil Rights

August 5, 2013

Ramis Wadood, a summer 2013 Government Intern at MPAC's DC office, is a sophomore at Columbia University majoring in political science with a focus on international politics. He is the president of his class at Columbia and currently serves as the Political Affairs Chair of Columbia’s Muslim Student Association.

Wadood has a strong passion for fighting for civil rights and liberties and hopes to one day have a positive influence in the community around him. Wadood’s involvement in his community is driven by his passion for politics and civic engagement. He currently serves on the advisory board of Americans for Informed Democracy, a global youth empowerment network that strives to engage youth to be an active part of pressing conversations and campaigns. Wadood also works with Generation Citizen as a high school teacher for inner-city youth, teaching them how to solve community issues.

Wadood said his internship at MPAC has allowed him to bridge the gaps between his Muslim identity and his American patriotism. In his role as a community leader and local activist, Wadood is constantly looking for opportunities to contribute to his society and train future leaders. He sincerely believes that the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.
