Meet MPAC’s Summer 2012 Government Relations Intern, Nabeel Zewail

August 22, 2012

MPAC is proud to introduce Nabeel Zewail, the Government Relations Intern for 2012. He is currently studying International Economics at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington.

Born and raised in California, Nabeel's father is Egyptian and mother is Syrian and spent much of his childhood summers in Damascus. He graduated from San Marino High School before beginning his study at Georgetown.

Growing up around MPAC and the Islamic Center of Southern California, Nabeel understands the importance for Muslims to become civically engaged with their communities. This understanding is the principle, which guides Nabeel's efforts at MPAC.

"If we want the status of Muslims in America and around the world to improve, we must not blame others but rather act ourselves. The Quran teaches us that God only helps those that change themselves." Nabeel said.

Nabeel is working with Aziza Hasan, MPAC's Southern California Government Relations Director, on an election guide to inform citizens of Los Angeles about the upcoming mayoral race. He has also attended a number of community forums with Law Enforcement from LAPD and the Sheriff's department, and a County Board of Supervisors Meeting.

"This internship has opened my eyes to the complexity of government in Southern California and the how important it is for Muslims to engage with government officials to ensure that our concerns are listened to" Nabeel added.
