NewGround’s Launches First Fellowship Session as Independent Organization

February 22, 2012

On Feb. 8, 20 Muslims and Jews convened for a five-month NewGround fellowship to learn with and from each other. NewGround began in 2006 as a response to the climate of tension and mistrust between Jews and Muslims in Los Angeles. More importantly, NewGround was founded to create a national model for healthy relations, productive engagement and social change between Muslim Americans and Jews.

Through the fellowship program, participants will enhance their conflict resolution skills, learn about the challenges of their respective communities and build relationships to partner on future initiatives with each other.

What also makes this fellowship special, is that four alumnus from past NewGround cohorts are being trained in how to facilitate and convene NewGround programing. This will allow NewGround to grow beyond the two founding facilitators, Malka Fenyvesi and Aziza Hasan, MPAC’s Director of Southern California Government Relations.

For five years, NewGround, was a program of MPAC, and is now successfully holding programming of its own. MPAC continues to support NewGround and its effort to improve relations between Los Angeles Jews and Muslims.
