Nassar Speaks at Anti-Cyber-Bullying Forum

On Friday October 24th the Muslim Public Affairs Council in partnership with the City of LA Human Relations Commission, the LA Unified School District and member organizations of the Anti-Bullying Coalition held a forum to discuss Cyber-Bullying Trends & Intervention Strategies.

The conference was attended by over 130 students and educators with special guest speakers City Attorney Mike Feuer, Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell (13th Council District), and LAUSD Chief Deputy Superintendent Michelle King.

MPAC’s Deana Nassar moderated the youth panel exploring the social media divide between youth and adults and ways in which adults can support young people in navigating cyber-bullying.

The participants spent the day examining current Cyber-bullying trends and exploring legal frameworks in hopes of reducing emotional and physical abuse amongst school-aged youth. They also explored ways to decrease bullying by identifying positive behavioral interventions and social media resources to share with community leaders and agencies.

The Anti-Bullying Coalition is a partnership organized by the LA Human Relations commission and LAUSD office of Human Relations to address issues related to bullying. The Coalition seeks to harness existing efforts to promote a collaborative approach to addressing bullying and bias in the community and on school campuses.
