MPAC Partners with LA Film Festival to Screen ‘Wadjda’

June 21, 2013

MPAC is proud to announce that it has signed on to be the Participating Organization for the feature film "Wadjda" at the 19th Annual Los Angeles Film Festival. Presented by Film Independent, the festival will run from June 13-23 at the Nokia Theater in downtown LA.

Passes and tickets are on sale now!

This rousing, pioneering gem -- not only the first Saudi Arabian feature shot within the Kingdom, but the first directed by a woman -- focuses on a remarkable 10-year-old girl named Wadjda, who sets her sights on buying a beautiful green bicycle so she can race her friend Abdullah through the suburban streets of Riyadh. But in this conservative society, virtuous girls don't ride bikes, and her mother forbids it. The rebellious Wadjda decides to raise the money herself by entering a Quran recitation competition at her school. The troublemaker must pose as a pious, model student to achieve her goal.

Presented by Film Independent, a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to promoting and supporting independent films and filmmakers, the LA Film Festival is a world-class cinematic event that showcases the best in new American and international cinema and provides the movie-loving public with access to some of the most critically-acclaimed filmmakers, film industry professionals and emerging new talent.

The festival features programs such as the filmmaker retreat, several outdoor screenings, coffee talks with the filmmakers and more. In addition, short films by high school students and music videos are also screened.
