Dear Representative ______________:

My name is [Insert Your Name] and I reside in [Insert Your City, and State]. As a person of a member of the ‘gang of seven,’ you have a tremendous opportunity to show solidarity with the 11 million immigrants living in the United States. As a U.S. citizen and your constituent, I commend you on dedicating your time and effort to reform our broken immigration system. While any bill cannot perfectly target and eliminate the problems that our immigration system faces, there are important changes that you can make. As you help draft this bill, please consider the following recommendations, which are imperative to our immigration system’s success:

  1. I urge you to support immigration policies that keep families together. Since the passage of 1996 immigration laws, more than 1.5 million immigrants have been deported. Every year nearly 200,000 non-citizens, many with children who are United States citizens, are deported and torn away from their families — even when a judge thinks they deserve to stay in the United States.

  2. I urge you to support a fair and comprehensive pathway to citizenship for our nation’s illegal immigrants, with an emphasis on an easy and effective pathway for DREAMers.

  3. I urge you to remove the contents of the Graham amendment from your version of the bill. The United States of America should not tolerate racial profiling of any kind, and this amendment allows us to unfairly profile based on national origin.

  4. I urge you to readjust the number of employment visas based on market demand. Potential immigrants deserve a fair chance to contribute to our country’s economy. Communities around the nation have taken a stand, hosted events, educated the American population at large, and shared stories of immigrants and DREAMers. Now is your chance to make the American public proud and support America’s future. Lastly, [Add your personal story, why does the passage of the bill matter to you?]

On behalf of the American public, I would like to thank your for your service and urge you to draft a bill that ensures that America’s tenet of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” live on forever.

Sincerely,
