This morning, Executive Director Salam Al-Marayati and Community Advocates President David Lehrer debated the issue of free speech at UC Irvine on the NPR affiliate KPCC's "AirTalk" in Los Angeles. Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren's recent appearance at UCI, sponsored by the law school and political science department, was interrupted 10 times by students expressing their disagreement, resulting in 11 arrests. Supporters of the students argue that they were exercising their First Amendment rights, while critics counter that there is an appropriate time and place for freedom of expression.
