MPAC Joins Campaign to Stop Veolia Transport's Bid in City of LA

Business discriminates on the basis of ethnicity and religion

August 9, 2012

MPAC recently joined a campaign to encourage the City Council of Los Angeles not to renew a contract with Veolia Transport, who currently operate the city’s DASH buses.

The business’ ongoing operations in Israel discriminate against Palestinians, offering transportation only to Israeli settlers on occupied land that was illegally confiscated.  This act is discriminatory and constitutes apartheid practices.
The campaign cites Veolia Transport's history of discrimination on the basis of ethnicity and religion, which violates an L.A. City Charter prohibition on engaging businesses or entities who engage in discriminatory practices. Los Angeles has a history of standing up against prejudice, be it locally or internationally.

In 1984, Los Angeles decided to divest from South Africa during the apartheid regime because of its discriminatory actions that were derived from racism and segregation. The Los Angeles City Council also voted in 2010 to boycott Arizona and any companies based there because of Arizona’s harsh anti-immigrant law SB1070.

We hope L.A. will continue to stand up and fight injustice.
