MPAC Sends Letters of Concern about Burma to Chinese Embassy

July 4, 2013

With the suffering of the Rohingya people in Burma continuing unabated, MPAC sent letters to high-ranking officials to request actions be taken to pressure the government of Burma to address the crisis.

MPAC sent the first letter to Secretary of State John Kerry, asking that sanctions against Burma not be fully eased. While it is necessary to encourage Burma in its first steps in its nascent democracy, sanctions must be an option on the table in order for the Burmese government to realize that there are consequences for allowing the atrocities to continue.

The second letter was sent to the Chinese Ambassador to the US, Cui Tiankai. MPAC pointed out to the Ambassador that China, as a major investor in Burma, has a unique interest in ensuring peace prevails in the bordering country.

The letters are a part of an ongoing campaign by MPAC to bring awareness to the plight of the Rohingya people and influence policy-makers to take action to encourage peace.
