Walk for the Children of Syria on Sept. 8

September 8, 2012

MPAC is pround to be one of the sponsors of the Syrian American Council's event "Walk for the Children of Syria" on Saturday, Sept. 8.  The goal of this nationwide event is to raise awareness about the humanitarian catastrophe in Syria and generate vital funds for children suffering under the dictatorship of Syria's Bashar al-Assad. His regime has launched a brutal crackdown for 16 months to suppress an uprising for freedom, dignity and democracy.

Thousands of children in Syria have become victims of the indiscriminate attacks characterizing the regime's bloody crackdown. Brutal crimes have claimed the lives of more than 1,800 children, forcing more than one hundred thousand families to flee their homes seeking safety in neighboring countries. Some estimates put the number of internally displaced at more than one million. Escalating violence against civilians in Syria has forced thousands of traumatized children to live in refugee camps surrounded by barbed-wire fences waiting and wondering when they can return to their normal lives. Each one of them has lost someone or something -- a parent, a sibling, a friend, and/or a home.

For each person that registers to walk, a donor will give $5 on their behalf to UNICEF's work in Syria. UNICEF is at the forefront of efforts to reduce child mortality worldwide. There has been substantial progress: the annual number of under-five deaths dropped from more than 12 million in 1990 to 7.6 million in 2010. But still, 21,000 children die each day from preventable causes. Our mission is to do whatever it takes to make that number zero by giving children the essentials for a safe and healthy childhood.
