Tarin to Speak on DC Panel about CVE & What the Next President Needs to Know

October 25, 2012

On Thursday, Oct. 25, Haris Tarin, the Director of MPAC's DC Office, will join David Schanzer, Associate Professor at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University and Director of the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security, and Heather Hurlburt, Executive Director of the National Security Network, for a conversation about "What the Next President Needs to Know About Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) in the US."

The Institute for Social Policy and Understanding and the Duke Islamic Studies Center at Duke University are hosting this engaging discussion on CVE with several leading experts, who will discuss the current state of counter-terrorism and homegrown extremism in the US and their recommendations moving forward.

In his capacity as the DC Director, Tarin engages various agencies within government including the White House, Department of Justice, State Department, Department of Homeland Security and offices on Capitol Hill. In the summer of 2011, President Barack Obama chose to call three leading young Americans to discuss policy issues, one of which was Tarin. The President called and then met with Tarin to discuss policies pertaining to national security, countering violent extremism, the American Muslim community and civic engagement.

Tarin has been published in various national and international publications including the LA Times, CNN and has a regular column on the Huffington Post. He has spoken at various domestic and international conferences and media outlets on topics such as National Security, Islam and governance, US-Muslim World Relations, Role of American Muslim institutions in Policy Formation, Religion and Public Life, and Civic Engagement. Haris is a Truman National Security Fellow and a USC/Georgetown AMCLI Fellow and is also the author of Intro to Muslim America.

To attend the event at Duke in Washington (1201 New York Avenue, NW Suite 1110), RSVP is required as space is limited. The panel discussion will be webcast live here, and the discussion can be followed on Twitter via #USMuslims for live tweets and  to ask questions.
