NY Firefighter to be Honored at 9/11 Commemoration Event

MPAC to Honor Muslim American Kevin James for Service

September 7, 2011

This Saturday, Sept. 10, MPAC and other interfaith organizations are hosting "One Nation, One Voice," a commemoration of the 10th anniversary 9/11 to honor first responders for their service to our community and country.

Joining us on this special day is Kevin James, a former Muslim New York firefighter who responded to the 9/11 attacks 10 years ago and has since dedicated his life to the service of others. You may also  know him from the film, "Muhammad the Legacy of a Prophet."

A civil rights and fire-safety activist, the successes of James labor have led to the passing of legislation that has saved thousands of lives in New York City. He became a firefighter in 1981 and was promoted to the rank of fire marshal in 1985. During his time as a firefighter, he received several awards for heroism.

James founded the Islamic Society of Fire Department Personnel and currently works to uphold constitutional and civil rights in post 9/11 world, particularly in the areas of racial profiling, detainee rights and employment discrimination.

Come and hear James tell his story of how he became a firefighter and how 9/11 has impacted his life.

The Saturday program will include a full day of services. James will speak during our 10 a.m. segment at the Islamic Center of Southern California (434 S. Vermont, Los Angeles, 90020).

RSVP on our Facebook page and join others in the conversation about this important event. Parking is free and will be in the lot on Shatto Place directly behind the Islamic Center. If interested in volunteering, please email Suha Yassine at syassine@icsconline.org.
