On Friday, Nov. 19, the Somali Community of Buffalo and WNY celebrated the appointment of one of their own, Mohamed A. Mohamed, from Buffalo as the Prime Minister of the Republic of Somalia. Dr. Khalid Qazi, MPAC board member and chair of the MPAC-Western New York chapter, was invited to speak on this special occasion.

Mohamed was granted asylum in the United States as political upheaval prevented him from returning to his native Somalia after serving in the Somali Embassy in Washington D.C as a financial analyst from 1985 until 1989.  He settled in Buffalo and lived here since 1990 raising his family of four children with his wife, Zainab.

The evening started with singing of the National Anthem of Somalia by school children and the Pledge of Allegiance. A broad section of the Muslim Community and the community at large was present at the banquet. Those who spoke included Sulub Kahin, one of the first Somali residents to settle in WNY; Ali Khatuun, vice chair of the Buffalo Immigrant and Refugee Coalition; Yahye Omar, chair of the WNY Council of Imams and the Executive Director of H.E.A.L-International Inc.; Mohamed Abdalle Suleyman: a Somali elder and an engineer by profession; and Dr. Qazi.

The evening was conducted by two young and budding leaders of the community; Maimuna Mohamud and Hassan Farah.   On behalf of MPAC and entire Community we wish Prime Minister Mohamed and his team a great success in his tough job ahead. We pray to Allah (SWT) to give him the vision and wisdom to bring peace and prosperity to his native land (Ameen)
