The Muslim Public Affairs Council of New York City announced today that Shehrbano Taseer, the daughter of Pakistan's Governor of the Punjab state, who was assassinated earlier this year for opposing the misuse of Pakistan's blasphemy laws, will be speaking at its Spring Banquet this Saturday, June 18, at the Hilton New York.  

Taseer, who graduated from Smith College with a degree in government and film studies and currently works as a journalist with Newsweek Pakistan, will be speaking alongside Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) and Laila Al-Arian, a journalist and senior producer for Al-Jazeera English.  

"In today's world of misrepresentation and misunderstanding about Islam and Muslims, the MPAC-NYC Banquet is an important platform to discuss timely and hot-button topics," said Salam Al-Marayati, MPAC President. "MPAC-NYC has been working diligently in the New York community for several years, and the banquet is an exciting forum in which to celebrate voices of courage and conscience, including our young leaders." 

MPAC-NYC's banquet will be recognizing Voices of Courage & Conscience, as well as honoring more than 15 delegates of MPAC's first Young Leaders Media Summit in NYC being held this week. 

Undergraduate and graduate students will be traveling to New York from around the country to get a first-hand look at the news industry. The delegates will be meeting with prominent reporters and editors at CNN, NBC, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal to discuss the media industry and its current influence on the world.
