Foreign Policy and Domestic Pragmatism: The Road Ahead The role of US Foreign Policy in the current situation in Afghanistan is complex and spans decades. This expert panel sought to discuss the path that led to the current crisis but also explore what options and realities lie ahead from a policy perspective for the United States and for other stakeholders regionally and globally, including the Taliban who have assumed de facto control over Afghanistan. MPAC and the Afghan-American Foundation hosted a 4 day virtual summit to discuss key issues relating to the crisis in Afghanistan and its impact in the United States. Empowering Afghans: Reframing the Narrative and Providing Support is a summit designed to elevate leading Afghan and Afghan-American voices. Our lineup of speakers includes key figures in entertainment, the government, and civil society. From Actors and Film Execs, to Members of Congress and beyond, all of speakers are actively working to improve perceptions and policies that impact our community. We'll be sharing some exciting updates on our work this past year and for our road ahead. We are honored to announce our keynote speaker, Jacob Blake, Sr. (American Muslim activist) and father of Jacob Blake who's tragic shooting in Kenosha Wisconsin, has sparked a powder-keg of civil unrest. Mr. Blake's story is a testament to the universal and shared Islamic and American values of justice, equity, human dignity, patience, and unity. A Moment to Act: the Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan Even before the coalition withdrawal in August 2021, Afghanistan was enduring a drought, ongoing conflict, political instability, and a pandemic. The events of the last several months have exacerbated existing vulnerabilities and created a brand new crisis in the form of an economic collapse. Afghanistan is now facing one of the most pressing and avoidable humanitarian disasters of our time. This panel sought to discuss conditions on the ground, highlight channels for relief and aid that are proving effective, and explore how the world can and should act. At MPAC’s 2021 virtual event we were honored to hear from Jacob Blake, Sr in his keynote speech. In the wake of the shooting of his son, Jacob Blake Sr. courageously rallied against a system stacked against him and other people of color. He joined voices with other families who have been the victims of police brutality and systemic racism throughout a turbulent 2020. As an American Muslim, Mr. Blake, Sr. spoke of the universal values of faith that call upon us to seek justice and urged for us to work together in unity to redouble our efforts to achieve an equitable future for all.
