'Rules of Engagement' at Zaytuna College

What's the most effective tool for social change?

October 18, 2019

What's the most effective tool for social change? Engagement, or abstention? Can an empty seat serve as an effective political strategy?

On August 15, 2019, MPAC President Salam Al-Marayati sat down with President and Co-Founder of Zaytuna College, Hamza Yusuf, former senior advisor on religious matters at the United States Department of State, Qamar ul-Huda, and San Francisco Human Rights Commissioner, Hala Hijazi, at Zaytuna College to discuss the benefits of engagement with those in positions of political power. The panelists tackle difficult topics and criticisms of an engagement-forward strategy, spanning topics from the 9/11 attacks to the invasion of Iraq. Watch the full conversation below.

This conversation is a continuation of a 2018 MPAC Convention 'Effective Advocacy' panel that brought thought-leaders, legal scholars, and activists together to discuss tactics and strategies for impacting meaningful change. May these conversations be two of many to come, and our communities continue to leverage these discussions to think more deeply about how our collective efforts can serve common goals.
