Protecting Vulnerable Communities from Hate Crime

July 17, 2018

On July 17th, 2018, Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis introduced a motion to the LA Board of Supervisors acknowledging the Hate Violence Prevention Partnership of Los Angeles (HVPPLA), which includes MPAC, Bienestar Human Services, the Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade and the California Conference for Equality and Justice. Together with HVPPLA, we raise awareness, build community strength and intergroup solidarity to counter hate crimes perpetrated against American Muslims and other vulnerable communities. With hate crimes on the rise in LA County for the third year in a row, this work is essential for the safety and well being of ourselves and our neighbors.

American Muslims stand in solidarity with all vulnerable communities targeted by hate crimes. Our communities intersect with many others, as Muslims can also be LGBTQ, African-American, Latino and South Asian. Muslims cross almost every section of society where hate crimes are on the rise.

We are especially grateful for the County of Los Angeles addressing the underreporting of hate crimes, as victims in our communities may fear exposure of their immigration status or countries of origin due to this administration’s policies like the Muslim Travel Ban.

On a national level, we are engaging with the U.S. Commission on Human Rights by offering recommendations urging them to address the rising threat of violent bigotry towards our communities, and outlining the deficiencies within the federal government that keep it from adequately protecting vulnerable communities.

We will continue to advocate for making the reporting of hate crimes more accessible and more effective, toward increased safety for all of our communities.
