Hope, inclusion, and inspiration at our annual Media Awards

On Sunday, April 14th, we honored the inspirational work of Betty Gabriel and Justin Marks on the TV series Counterpart, Nijla Mu’min for her film Jinn, and Karen Attiah and Jamal Khashoggi (posthumously) for their courage in speaking truth to power. These strong-willed, courageous, and talented trailblazers show us that our journey toward inclusion and authentic portrayals on TV, film, and media is well underway.

Securing our community against white supremacist violence

The attacks in Christchurch are a reminder that white supremacist violence is a serious threat abroad and at home. Whether it’s sparked by social media platforms or the news media, it is an urgent concern for our community. We successfully worked with Facebook to remove content that glorifies white nationalism and separatism and we are working with our Congressional partners to ensure that these concerns are also reflected in updated policies.

 

 

  

Fighting injustice

It’s been a little over two years since the first Executive Order banning Muslims from entering the country was signed by Donald Trump. After two long years of fighting the Muslim ban in the courts, we turned our focus on Congress for a legislative fix. I’m excited to announce that after months of working with Rep. Judy Chu and Senator Chris Coons, the NO BAN Act has finally been introduced.

Creating a movement in Hollywood through empowerment

Muslim creatives are making their way forward in Hollywood, both in front of and behind the camera. Last month, we hosted a panel at the Writers Guild of America where we discussed how to take this moment that Muslims are having in Hollywood and turn it into a movement. These panels provide opportunities for Muslim screenwriters and filmmakers to tell their authentic stories and encourage the industry to seek them out.
