Hungry but working hard!

June 3, 2018

We're over halfway through Ramadan and I'm counting down the days to Eid! Aside from just being hungry I know you, like me, are #HungryForChange. I won’t sugar coat it. The challenges and setbacks this past year have been numerous. But we've made tremendous progress in our efforts to counter divisive policies and negative portrayals of Islam and Muslims. Please consider a gift of $250 to MPAC to help us reach our $150,000 goal. Your donation is zakat-eligible and is tax-deductible.

Here's what we've been working on in the last month.

Muslim Screenwriter Labs

In an effort to discover and nurture talented Muslim writers that will create more nuanced and authentic portrayals of Muslims, we are partnering with major entertainment studios to develop a series of day-long labs in Los Angeles designed to advance screenwriters in their careers. The first in this series is a partnership with Disney/ABC Television on TV comedy writing. Read more.

Suspending ICE Initiative

As part of an active coalition of civil rights, civil liberties and immigration groups, we suspended Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) automated social media vetting initiative, which seeks to identify individuals considered “high risk” and generate at least 10,000 leads for deportation every year. This is a critical step in pushing back against policy proposals that violate our privacy, civil rights and civil liberties. Read more.

Countering Bigotry

In conjunction with All Saints Church, Friends in Deed and First Methodist, we held a press conference to elevate a message of “radical inclusion” to counter Franklin Graham’s sweepingly false generalizations that Islam encourages domestic violence and murder. This amplifies our voices so hate and bigotry have no place in America. Read more.

We are committed to creating positive change. Thanks to your support, we are engaging the government and media to improve understanding and policies affecting American Muslims. This Ramadan, please consider investing $100 in MPAC to continue this critical work.
