Elevating Black Muslim Narratives at the Writers Guild

A groundbreaking conversation on Being Black and Muslim in entertainment with MuslimARC

September 6, 2019

Our Hollywood Bureau co-hosted a groundbreaking panel with the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative (MuslimARC) on “Black Muslim Narratives in Entertainment” at the Writers Guild Foundation in Los Angeles. The panel challenged the damaging tropes all-too-often seen on screen.

Panelists spoke to a packed room about the importance of authentic representation on screen, and the importance of supporting each others’ narratives so that doors will open for others.

Black Muslims make up over 25% of the American Muslim population, and the panelists encouraged the screenwriters in the audience not to wait, because “everyone deserves to have their story told.”
