We call on Secretary Pompeo to condemn Brunei’s anti-gay stoning law

This law is a grotesque violation of human rights and religious freedom

In early April, the Sultan of Brunei announced a new law under the guise of Sharia principles, that would sanction the death penalty for LGBTQ people and those who commit adultery, amputation for robbery, flogging of women who have abortions, and criminalization of exposing Muslim children to the beliefs and practices of any religion other than Islam.

This use of Sharia to justify human rights violations reflects a misinterpretation of the values of Islam. The blatant disregard of basic human rights is a clear deviation from the core principles of justice, peace, and human dignity of our faith.

We strongly urge Secretary Pompeo to condemn this law and use all diplomatic tools — including imposing sanctions, barring the Sultan, and other senior Brunei government officials from entering the United States, and the seizure of their assets.
