Panel on “Islam vs. the West” - The Lie That Keeps on Giving

Middle East War, ISIS and Impact on American Muslims

(Washington, D.C., 12/15/17) - ISIS-inspired violence continues to be an enigma for U.S. policy makers. Its impact is detrimental to the status of the American Muslim community. The Trump administration is resolving to controlling immigration and increasing surveillance on Muslim communities. These reactions cannot be the centerpiece of any sustainable or beneficial policy.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), a public policy organization for American Muslims, cordially invites you to attend a panel discussion at the National Press Club on the issue of terrorism and the role American Muslims can play to combat it. The panel will include the following speakers:

Salam Al-Marayati, MPAC President

Shadi Hamid, Senior Fellow at The Brookings Institution

Hady Amr, Nonresident Senior Fellow at The Brookings Institution

For decades, Al-Marayati, co-founder of MPAC, has warned of the threat of religiously motivated extremism. After witnessing the turmoil extremists created in the Middle East in the 90’s, he and his organization spoke out about the danger of this violence reaching our shores.

Shadi Hamid is a senior fellow in the Project on U.S. Relations with the Islamic World in the Center for Middle East Policy and the author of the new book "Islamic Exceptionalism: How the Struggle Over Islam is Reshaping the World."

Hady Amr is a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, working on a range of socioeconomic and geopolitical issues facing the Middle East with a focus on Israeli-Arab Relations, the Levant, and the Gulf, as well as Arab Human Development, Countering Violent Extremism, and U.S. Public Diplomacy.

  • A critique of Trump’s CVE efforts as well as past administrations.
  • An honest reflection on the American Muslim community’s response -- or lack of response --  and leadership on this issue
  • What role (if any) does the way Islam is practiced and understood by the masses impact this issue?
  • What are the biggest challenges facing American Muslims today in countering ISIS?
  • What will it take for us, as Americans, to get ahead of ISIS’s propaganda?

There will be time for Q&A. Lunch will be served.
