Pulling Out of the Iran Deal Harms America's Interest

May 8, 2018

The Muslim Public Affairs Council is alarmed by Trump's decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal. This decision puts us in danger of getting entangled in yet another manufactured war in the Middle East. Trump continues to isolate us from our global partners and puts us at risk from losing further confidence from the international community that we are a nation that stands by our agreements.

Securing the Iran deal meant that Iran would have been prevented from getting a nuclear weapon thanks to sustained diplomatic efforts. The marathon negotiations showed that strong and decisive talks can be just as effective, if not more effective, than military force. President Obama’s will to achieve nuclear de-escalation without putting lives at risk and without involving the nation in another war had the potential to encourage future administrations to engage in diplomacy before reacting with military force. Unfortunately, the Trump administration, run by far right war mongers, seeks to destroy our diplomatic tools.

Intelligence experts, members of Congress and national security experts all agree that pulling out of the deal would harm America's interest and geopolitical position. This is another policy blunder in a series of executive orders meant to push a nationalist, xenophobic and hawkish agenda. Pulling out of the Iran deal sets our strategic interests back and is a direct violation of the agreement's terms set by the United States.
