Meet Our Policy Intern, Youssuf Hassan

November 20, 2017

My name is Youssuf Hassan, and I am from Cresskill, New Jersey. I am a student at American University, pursuing a B.A. in Business and Public Policy.

Growing up as a Muslim in the U.S., I have had to learn to understand the constantly changing world around us. I have always found politics and current events interesting, especially when relating to Islam. At this moment in American history, the American Muslim community and Islam in general are being painted with a broad brush. There are some who conflate a small group of violent people with the entire global Muslim community and misrepresent the whole religion. In this political environment, I always had something new to learn.

A big part of my love for public policy and politics is because of my involvement on my high school’s debate team. Having been on the team for three years, I learned a lot about developing new policy, which I have enjoyed doing ever since.

I am looking forward to all of the new opportunities that have become available to me since I moved to Washington, D.C only a couple of months ago. A policy internship with MPAC will be a great way to develop my professional skills in the workplace, as well as doing work that interests me and helps to benefit the Muslim community. As an American Muslim, I have seen all types of ways that Muslims can be misunderstood, and I am honored to be able to make a real world impact for MPAC.
