Day 5: Thank you, Muhammad Ali

June 9, 2016

On behalf of MPAC, I had the honor of attending the funeral of Muhammad Ali. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew that it was a historical moment that I wanted to share with my son. As American Muslims, I also felt as if it's incumbent to pay respect to the man who brought so much respect to our faith and community.

But these last few days have shown me that his impact and reach was far greater and deeper than that.

Muhammad Ali was a champion of the world because he taught us all that we could remain true to our different beliefs and still be united. He taught us that we could be confident in our identity and convictions and still respect others.

As American Muslims living in today's divisive climate, there's a lot that we can learn from Muhammad Ali's legacy in how we should engage others and address the challenges we face.

No one has done more to build bridges of understanding and remind us of our common humanity.

Thank you, Muhammad Ali.
