By: MPAC Policy Bureau and MPAC’s African American Muslim Insight Council
As we observe Black History Month and celebrate the accomplishments and contributions that African Americans have made to this nation, MPAC will celebrate the diversity of American Muslims by hosting evening conversations to unite the American Muslim communities. You can catch the first conversation here.
Islam has arrived to this land numerous times over the past few centuries, with various waves of immigration from Africa, Asia, and Europe. Starting with the Europeans, who some notable explorers subscribed to Islam, to the first major wave of Muslims amongst the enslaved populations from Africa, and continuing on through today, the many waves of Muslims immigrants who come from all over the world, have decided to make the United States their home.
Today, the United States is home to over 2.5 million Muslims, with the largest segment of American Muslims being African American. We, at the Muslim Public Affairs Council recognize that our community is far from being a monolith, and that many American Muslims subscribe to mosques and communities that are represented by their ethnicity. To address the gap that exists between the various American Muslim communities, the Muslim Public Affairs Council will be hosting three evening live audio conversations on Twitter Spaces, where we can all share our perspectives as American Muslims. The goal of these conversations is to continue the ongoing efforts to bridge the gaps that exist within the American Muslim communities.
MPAC recognizes that these gaps cannot cease to exist without honest and tenacious conversations between American Muslims, and that efforts to unite may organically start when we understand each other, and each other’s struggles, and what it means to us to be an American Muslim.
Join us on the following three Wednesdays at 8pm ET, and bring your ears to listen to others, as you share your thoughts.
Invest in MPAC’s work to improve public policies and perceptions. We’re changing how America views Islam and Muslims.
