In a historic move, President Biden will formally nominate Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve as Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court this afternoon. The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) applauds and celebrates this momentous nomination.

Judge Jackson brings with her a highly distinguished career in the legal field, with a proven track record of upholding and defending equitable justice. She currently serves as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, a role to which she was one President Biden’s first judicial nominees and to which she was confirmed with bipartisan support. She will be the first former federal public defender to join SCOTUS, having dedicated two years of her career to representing criminal defendants.
If confirmed, Judge Jackson will become the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court. She will be replacing retiring Justice Stephen G. Breyer, whom she clerked for in 1999. Like Justice Breyer, who has dedicated his career to bring forth fairer and more equitable sentencing, Judge Jackson has an intimate understanding of our criminal justice system and has time and time again defended and upheld civil rights and racial justice with courage and conviction.
President Biden’s nomination of Judge Jackson gives us hope and renews our faith in his administration’s promise to nominate justices of the highest caliber. We are encouraged by the bipartisan support Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson has received in her previous nominations and urge our Senate to promptly confirm her as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
