Invest in Your Future this Ramadan!

July 2, 2014

Ramadan is upon us, the month when God first revealed the Quran and prescribed fasting.  It is a time for charity as well, and it is a time to remind us the categories for giving our zakat.

"The offering given for the sake of God is meant for: the poor and the needy, those who administer them [the poor and needy], those whose hearts need to be won over, the freeing of people from bondage, to help those who are in debt, those who struggle in the cause of God, and the travelers who are in need... this is ordained by God; God is all knowing and wise" (Quran 9:60).

Donating to MPAC is zakat eligible because:

1. Softening the Hearts of People

"I first came into contact with MPAC several years ago when I was a diversity executive at Fox Broadcasting. [MPAC] brought to our attention inaccurate and provocative portrayals of Muslims on our prime-time series '24.' I brokered conversations and meetings between [MPAC], our leading creative executives and the Executive Producers of the series. I was deeply impressed with the conduct of the Muslim representatives. Their poised, rational but firm defense of their community's values and contribution to our society reminded me, as an African American, of what must have been required of my ancestors in the most difficult days of the civil rights struggle. Those conversations restored some of my optimism that calm and candid dialogue can continue to provide a path to American progress."

-- Ron Taylor
Screenwriter, Former VP of Diversity Development at Fox Entertainment

2. Ensuring Freedom

“Our country has a lot to learn, our policy makers have a lot learn about this community, about the religion. And the reason I say that is because if MPAC existed in 1939, '40, '41, '42, Japanese-Americans would have never been sent to internment camps.”

-- Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA)

3. Striving for the Cause of God

Our Safe Spaces Initiative is intended to protect the sanctity of our mosques and deter any intrusion from agent provocateurs or ideological extremists. It has been lauded by community leaders and government officials. This program will help to push surveillance out of mosques and replace it with programs that make Muslims partners with fellow Americans, not suspects.  We believe that the Safe Spaces Initiative will help to clear the path for working more effective for the cause of God.
