MPAC Muslim American Young Leaders Summit

Southern California Young Leaders Summit in Los Angeles

Giving A Voice to Young Muslim Americans

On August 5-7, 2009, the Muslim Public Affairs Council will hold its third annual Southern California Muslim American Young Leaders Summit. The event will provide 30 of the region's top young leaders exposure to the inner workings of government, media, civic groups and Hollywood, while simultaneously providing government officials and media organizations the opportunity to learn what's on the minds of young Muslim Americans.

"The Summit is designed to enhance the civic identity of the participants, and to redefine the face of young Muslim American leaders among the policymaking and opinion-shaping community," said MPAC Government Relations Director Safiya Ghori. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience to enhance leadership skills, share unique perspectives with influential individuals and institutions, and build relationships with like-minded young Muslim Americans."

As one participant said about last year's summit:

"MPAC's Los Angeles Youth Summit brought to my attention that in order for Muslims to be talked to and not just talked about, we need to work on integrating into American culture, collectively and consistently.

"Much to my surprise, many of the professionals we met with showed a genuine willingness to engage with Muslims. Now it is time for us Muslims to take the initiative and become a partner in these efforts, and continue to work with public officials to advance our place in society."

Selected student leaders, varying in ages from 17-25, will have an unprecedented opportunity to interact with a group of their peers who are also interested in enhancing civic and political participation in their local communities. Both in meetings with officials and during informal discussions, they will identify barriers and opportunities within their communities and develop strategies for enhancing local involvement in public service as an expression of the values they hold as Muslims.

Last summer, MPAC held its immensely successful 2nd Annual National Summit in Washington, D.C., which brought 25 young leaders from 11 different states to Capitol Hill for four days of intense meetings with members of Congress, leaders from the Gallup Organization and Interfaith Alliance, as well as officials with the Departments of Justice, State, Treasury and Homeland Security. Delegates returned home with a deep commitment to enhancing the civic and political participation of Muslims from their local communities.
