National Muslim American Young Leaders Summit

On July 9-12, 2008, the Muslim Public Affairs Council will hold its second annual National Muslim American Young Leaders (NMAYL) Summit in Washington, D.C. providing 25 of the nation's top young leaders with an opportunity to meet with government, media, and civic institutions to gain firsthand experience of their inner workings.

The Summit is designed to enhance the civic identity of the participants, and to redefine the image and provide a voice of young Muslim American leaders among the policymaking and opinion-shaping community.

"The Summit is designed to enhance the civic identity of the participants, and to redefine the image and provide a voice of young Muslim American leaders among the policymaking and opinion-shaping community," said MPAC Government Relations Director Safiya Ghori. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience to enhance leadership skills, share unique perspectives with influential individuals and institutions and build relationships with like-minded young Muslim Americans."

As one participant said about last year's summit:

The message I returned with is that... it is now the responsibility of our generation to make these desired and necessary changes.

"The message I returned with is that: we, the progressive Muslim Americans, have to do more than be concerned with issues that impact Muslims locally, and worldwide... This is our time. It is now the responsibility of our generation to make these desired and necessary changes. And the only way to do that is by getting our educated, well established, Muslim American progressives up there on staff and in the debate - not just the topic of it."
