Serving your Fellow Muslims

Community Engagement at Masjid Taqwa

September 5, 2014

One of the most engaging ways of communicating your message to your fellow Muslims is by going to them and asking the question: How can we help you?

Last Saturday night, I Am Change Fellow Abeer Gaber and Community Outreach Fellow Marwa Abdelghani went to Masgid Taqwa in Altadena to do just that. The community members of the area reflected a deep passion in wanting their mosque to grow and develop. They welcomed MPAC’s extended hand in wanting to assist the mosque in any way possible.

“It was the first time I had been to Masjid Taqwa and as soon as I entered and received the first ‘Assalam Alaykum,’ I felt like I had just entered a comforting home. The people there are so kind and welcoming, I felt sad when it was time to leave. I cannot wait to go there again to serve them," said Abdelghani.

Gaber spoke to the members of Masjid Taqwa about MPAC’s several community events that are held across the country, including our “I Am Change” civic engagement trainings, MPAC President Salam Al-Marayati’s Medina Constitution lecture, and our “Let’s Be Honest” forums. Abdelghani introduced MPAC’s young leaders programs and the yearly summits we hold for our youth.

At the dinner, several other community leaders also spoke about their community initiatives, including MPAC partner, Umar Hakim of the ILM Foundation. He emphasized the urgent need for Muslims to engage with their political and social leaders in order to make the change that they wish to implement to benefit the Muslim community.

MPAC set up a booth at the information table at the mosque and engaged with members of the community about how they can become involved in MPAC. One member said, “I think it’s about time that I begin working with my Muslim community and MPAC seems like the best place to start!”

Look out for an invitation to our upcoming event on the Medina Constitution by Salam Al-Marayati at Masjid Taqwa!
