Afghan Law Violates Islamic Human Rights Norms

Late last week, Afghan President Hamid Karzai signed a family law bill that the Afghan parliament passed with an overwhelming majority.  The United Nations has stated that this law "legalizes rape within marriage and bans wives from stepping outside their homes without their husbands' permission."

MPAC CONDEMNS AL-ZAWAHRI'S RACIST COMMENTS ABOUT OBAMA

The Muslim Public Affairs Council today condemned the despicable racist comments released today by Al-Qaeda's second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri about President-Elect Barack Obama on a video message. Al-Zarahwi's exploitation of religion and race in his derogatory remarks against Obama, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and former Secretary of State Colin Powell is deplorable. In the video, Al-Zawahri is heard calling Obama a "house negro" who is "the direct opposite of honorable black Americans" like Malcolm X.

Muslim Advocates, MPAC, CAIR, ADC: Senate Homeland Security Report Lacks Substantive Analysis, Contradicts Own Recommendations

Four of the country's leading Arab-American and Muslim-American advocacy organizations today issued a rare joint letter expressing strong reservations about a recently released Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee report on "homegrown terrorism." The report, issued jointly by Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and ranking member Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), claims that the threat posed by violent extremists now comes "increasingly from within" the U.S.

Muslim Americans Call for Serious Dialogue with Pope Benedict XVI

In an interfaith meeting today with Pope Benedict XVI, Muslim American leaders delivered a letter calling for meaningful dialogue on Muslim-Catholic issues. An initiative of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC), the letter called for vital engagement between the head of the Catholic Church and Muslim Americans.

"Fitna" Fails to Provoke

The debut of the latest anti-Muslim mini-film, entitled "Fitna", from extreme rightwing Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders last week was highly anticipated for the expected violent backlash it would provoke. Five days after its Internet release and millions of downloads later, the so-called backlash has amounted to little more than a ripple among Muslims worldwide.
