Religious Freedom

People of all faiths should be allowed to practice their faith free from intimidation and discrimination. Religious freedom is a treasured right valued by all Americans. Upholding religious freedom in turn upholds our pluralistic democracy. Recently, we have seen a rise in hate crimes against minority communities based on their religious background. Americans of all faith backgrounds should be concerned that an attack on one religious group, is an attack on us all. Americans should demand that the next president should work to uphold and promote religious freedom and work to ensure that Americans are not discriminated against based on their religion.

President Barack Obama:

1. During his remarks at the White House's annual iftar in August 2010, Obama stressed the central value of religious freedom, saying America should treat everyone equal regardless of religion.

2. He said that Americans of various faiths -- including Jews and Catholics -- seeking to build their houses of worship have faced discrimination in the past, they were able to overcome those challenges and enriched our nation's pluralism in the process.” (Source: http://archive.mpac.org/issues/religious-freedom/mpac-commends-president-obama-for-upholding-religious-freedom.php)

3. The Obama administration has also intervened in cases where prisoners are denied religious literature.

After a South Carolina sheriff prohibited inmates from getting devotional materials and other publications in the mail, the Justice Department sued.

In the end, the county agreed to let inmates receive Bibles, Torahs, Qurans.(Source: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/ct-oped-0223-chapman-20120223,0,4351734.column)

Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney:

1. Romney has been fighting assaults on religious freedom for a long time and at moments and in places where it was not popular, to say the least.

2. When Catholic Charities in Massachusetts was being forced out of the adoption business because they were trying to provide adoption services for needy children while staying true to their beliefs, it was Romney who stood shoulder to shoulder with the Catholic Church and filed a bill ("An Act Protecting Religious Freedom”) to protect religious liberty.

3. At this moment when religious liberty is under attack from many quarters, people of all faiths won’t find a more ardent or effective advocate than Romney. (Source: http://www.mittromney.com/blogs/mitts-view/2012/02/people-all-faiths-wont-find-more-ardent-or-effective-advocate-mitt-romney)
