Last week, Edina Lekovic, MPAC’s Director of Policy and Programming, received the prestigious Trailblazer Award from CAIR-Chicago at its 8th annual banquet in honor of her work with the media and her positive representation of the Muslim American voice.

For the past decade, Lekovic has been a recognizable voice on Islam and Muslims on national and international media airwaves, discussing the events of the day. Lekovic has faced mud-slinging, accusations, suspicions and the tensest of environments with fearlessness and inspiring clarity and calm.

With more than 1,200 people in attendance, the CAIR-Chicago dinner included special remarks from Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, who publicly pledged to uphold “criminal leads” rather than “blanket suspicions” and to respect civil rights in the wake of revelations of NYPD’s massive surveillance of Muslims across the northeast.

Professor John Esposito and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) also spoke about standing up for the ideals of religious pluralism, tolerance, equal rights and mutual understanding.
