MPAC Honors Ashura, Calls for Unity

November 13, 2013

The Hijra marks not only the beginning of the Islamic calendar but also the beginning of a new civilization, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was selected to lead a new society in Medina after he and his people fled Mecca.

Ashura is the tenth day of the month of Muharram in the new Hijra year, when Imam Hussain and his group were massacred in their stand against tyranny. Also, Ashura is a point in history when  Prophet Moses liberated the Children of Israel from Pharoah. Some Muslims commemorate this historic event by fasting.

MPAC honors all of these important historic events and calls for unity among Muslims in accepting all traditions.
