MPAC Commends Citizens, Public Officials’ Vigilance In Thwarting Attacks On The U.S

October 29, 2010

(Washington, DC - 10/29/10) -- In light of this week’s pair of attempted attacks against our nation, the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) commends the vigilance of citizens and public officials in their successful efforts to prevent violent extremism.

MPAC is currently monitoring the incidents, which include the explosives found on cargo airplanes traveling from Yemen to the U.S. and U.K. last night and the failed attack against the DC Metrorail system earlier this week. We urge our fellow citizens to remain aware and notify local police about possible threats to public safety.

In a press conference this afternoon, President Barack Obama warned the American public about an Al-Qaeda plan to attack the U.S. by using bombs sent in airmail packages. This follows yesterday’s arrest of Ashburn, VA, resident Farooque Ahmed on charges of planning to bomb the DC Metrorail system. These two are the latest in a string of high-profile counterterrorism cases in the past two years.

Government officials said today tips from foreign intelligence officials led them to intercept airmail packages containing armed explosives, which were being sent to the United States and Britain. According to the Associated Press, a concerned member of the local Muslim community alerted the FBI of Ahmed’s alleged intentions to bomb the DC Metrorail.

"Despite the gravity of both incidents, we are relieved to know that the increased awareness of both citizens and government officials played a part in keeping our nation safe,” said Government Liaison Alejandro J. Beutel. "If these charges are true, yesterday's arrest is the latest indication of the positive role Muslim Americans play in thwarting violent attacks on the U.S."

The role of Muslim Americans in preventing violent extremist plots is nothing new. According to MPAC's "Post-9/11 Terrorism Incident Database," one out of three Al-Qaeda plots threatening the United States has been foiled with the assistance of Muslim communities.

MPAC will continue to engage policy makers and elected officials to fully ensure laws and policies can continue to bring terrorists to justice while upholding civil rights and liberties for all Americans. Ahmed is innocent until proven guilty and will have his day in court.
