Lekovic Speaks at RIS Convention in Toronto

January 3, 2013

Just before Christmas, Edina Lekovic, MPAC's Director of Policy and Programming, traveled to Toronto for the 11th Annual Reviving the Islamic Spirit Conference (RIS). Before an audience of more than 15,000 people, she explored the topic “I’m Innocent, I’ve Been Framed: When Others Frame Your Picture.”

Over 20,000 Muslims from across North America gathered for the convention, which centered around the theme “Divine Light for Living Right.”

“The conference has always been about uniting and joining hands with scholars, journalists, academics, representatives from other faiths, and artists to promote messages of peace and tolerance,” said Farhia Ahmed, RIS spokeswoman.

Lekovic said she was proud to speak alongside former MTV Europe personality Kristiane Backer, and featured among a prominent array of Muslim scholars including Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah, Karen Armstrong, the Grand Mufti of Bosnia Mustafa Ceri?, scholar Habib Ali Al-Jifri, Swiss professor Tariq Ramadan, Dr. Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Egyptian preacher Amr Khaled, Dr. Aisha al-Adawiyya, Dr. Tawfique Chowdhury and Yasmin Mogahed.

The RIS convention was first launched in 2003 by Muslim youth to tackle the backlash on Islam and Muslims after the 9/11 and to build a bridge of understanding with non-Muslims.
