Join MPAC’s Hollywood Bureau for a reading of "The Guest of the Sultan,” a play by T.S. Cook on Feb. 23 from 7 – 10 p.m. at Loyola Marymount University's Murphy Recital Hall (1 LMU Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90045). Cook was nominated for an Academy Award for writing the screenplay to "The China Syndrome" starring Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas.

The play reading features Robert Trebor, Keith Szarabajka and Kareem Ferguson.

"The Guest of the Sultan" follows James Devareau, a news reporter who has been kidnapped by terrorists, and his captor Mustafa, a young Pakistani man who is interviewing Devareau on camera. Both men are true believers — Mustafa in Islam and James in Catholicism. During the interview, a massive earthquake sends both tumbling into an airless sub-basement.

In the darkness they encounter Amir, a Jinni -- an immortal creature who has been waiting in the ruins since the year 1219 to tell the story of the meeting between St. Francis of Assisi and his former master, the Sultan Malik al-Kamil. In the midst of the brutal Crusades, Francis and al-Kamil tried to find ways for the followers of the two religions to respect one another.

A panel discussion will follow the reading.
