MPAC Forum to Examine Cultural Diplomacy in US-Middle East Relations

On Oct. 11, MPAC co-sponsored "Unraveling the Publicity Machine: Understanding the Identity and Integration of Middle Eastern-Americans," a forum which examined the role of cultural diplomacy in shaping America's relationship with the Middle East.

A panel of experts from diverse backgrounds gather for a policy-shaping discussion moderated by media consultant Bill Overton. Speakers included Salam Al-Marayati, MPAC PresidentSuheil Bushrui, professor at the University of Michigan; Octavia Nasr, CNN's Chief Middle East correspondent for 20 years, Farouk El-Baz, NASA Scientist and a professor at Boston University and Anas Canon, creative director of Remarkable Current Music.

The diverse round table brought to light the positive economic and cultural impact the Middle Eastern community has delivered to the U.S. by illustrating similarities and distinctions, examinging diversity issues through cross-cultural relationships and expanding the perspectives of an emerging community. The panel established a framework to map out a social plan for tolerance.

Held at the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department headquarters, the event was co-hosted by Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca and Wafa Kanan, the founder of ALO Magazine and ALO Cultural Foundation
