January 30, 2014

On Saturday, Jan. 25, community members joined MPAC-Western New York at the Jaffarya Center of Niagara Frontier for its annual meeting, which included board elections, a conversation about contemporary issues facing the American Muslim community and a reception.

The meeting started with a presentation from the MPAC-WNY President Dr. Khalid Qazi, who highlighted the achievements and programs conducted during the year. Following the president’s report, the new Executive Board was elected. Fuad Sherrif was elected as the new president, and Dr. Qazi, the chapter cofounder, was named the new Senior Advisor for MPAC-WNY.

For the second part of the meeting, Janice M. Owen, Community Relations Officer for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services - Buffalo (USCIS), made a presentation about the services it offers.

She explained how USCIS partners with community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, immigrant advocacy groups, businesses, educators and government agencies to inform immigrant communities about policies and procedures. Through these partnerships, USCIS identifies and addresses problems that impact these communities through education, feedback, guidance and outreach activities.

Owen emphasized the importance of education in order to prevent identity theft and immigration scams that have become a real problem. She also explained the reasons for delay in the immigration process and the steps that can be taken to prevent delay.

USCIS has many different branches based on legislation. She offered information and encouraged individuals to become Accredited Immigration Representatives, who can assist the community in many ways.
