Juan Cole & Salam Al-Marayati to Explore Obama's Approach to Muslim World at NYC Event

Following President Obama's historic speech to the Muslim world, the Muslim Public Affairs Council will hold a policy discussion on "Forging a New Relationship with the Muslim World" on Thursday, June 11th at Columbia University in New York City.
Panelists Dr. Juan Cole, author of the recently released book "Engaging the Muslim World," and MPAC Executive Director Salam Al-Marayati will assess the Obama administration's early efforts to re-engage the Muslim world and provide specific policy recommendations to improve America's reputation based on its actions related to Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Palestine, and the broader Muslim world.

Juan Cole is Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of Michigan. For three decades, he has sought to put the relationship of the West and the Muslim world in historical context. He is the author of "Engaging the Muslim World" (2009) and "Napoleon's Egypt: Invading the Middle East" (2007). In addition to his extensive media presence as an analyst on the Iraq War, the politics of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and the increasing conflict with Iran, he also writes extensively about Egypt, Iran, Iraq, and South Asia in a regular column at Salon.com and on his own blog "Informed Comment".
